London Buses: Review of 2023

2023 proved to be a much more stable year than its predecessor.

Although cuts continued to sweep through a perennially cash-strapped Transport for London (TfL), including the withdrawal and/or rerouting of some long-established central London bus services, TfL stabilised its finances and there was even opportunity for expansion again.

The year’s most significant development was in the outer suburbs, which saw a new ring of limited-stop express bus routes thrown around the capital. Branded as Superloop, with a white and red livery, the first five of a planned ten routes aimed to enable faster links over established corridors.

There was also the usual sizeable influx of new buses, all of them now electric, not to mention several hundred all-over advertisements to catch and collect.

This year’s review packs in more than 250 high-quality colour pictures, illustrating the enormous volume of routine contract changes and their accompanying new buses, and sends off those vehicles on their way out.

As well as capturing the miscellany of buses’ odd workings to routes on which they’re not supposed to be, the book also covers the myriad of classic bus running days carried out over the year, plus takes a look at the current state of open-top tourist services, explores the buses to be found around the edge of town and concludes with a look ahead to 2024.
