Dan-Air

Dan-Air began almost by accident: with an aircraft received for a loan payment that wasn’t honoured. With the means to fly aircraft parts around the globe, a new subsidiary to the parent shipbroking company, Davies and Newman, was formed.

This book charts the history of Dan-Air over its 39 years of existence, during which it became a leading inclusive tour charter provider, an important scheduled service operator and ultimately one of the UK’s largest, best known and most popular independent airlines. Its growth and vast expansion mirror that of other independent airlines that formed in the aftermath of World War Two, ultimately enabling the development and growth of the overseas package holiday industry.

Focusing on the aircraft acquired, its route network development and operations, this volume charts the meteoric rise of Dan-Air as its market boomed, and how it subsequently failed, losing market share and its competitive edge and failing to capitalise on significant contracts that could have saved the business.

With more than 100 photographs, this book tells the story of a commercial enterprise that helped transform the holidays of a nation.
