Key Publishing is proud to announce an exclusive collection of Hornby IIA-D biomass wagons for ‘OO’ gauge in original Drax Powering Tomorrow livery. Four twin packs are available, with each pair having unique running numbers.

With delivery expected in Spring 2026, secure your PRE-ORDER with a £10 deposit (non-refundable). When the model is available the Customer Services team will contact you for the remaining balance of £79.99 - full price including deposit £89.99 per twin pack.

The IIA-D biomass wagons were introduced in 2013-2014 with an initial fleet of 225 wagons being built by WH Davis for the transport of biomass pellets from docks to the Drax in North Yorkshire - the UK's largest power station. A further 30 wagons have since been built bringing the fleet to 255.

The hopper wagons maximised the volume available to transport biomass, which is much lighted than coal, and included roof covers as the material has to be kept dry at all times. The design incorporates four hoppers positioned along the length of the wagons while the body profile was created to use the full extent of the UK loading gauge.

On introduction the wagons carried a silver base livery with green and blue 'swooshes' together with Drax Powering Tomorrow text with the livery wrapping across pairs of wagons. They are used to transport biomass from terminals at Liverpool, Immingham, Tyne, Redcar and Hull to Drax Power station.

Since their introduction the wagons have been through livery changes, but the original Drax Powering Tomorrow scheme is still seen in train formations today mixed in with Northern Power House branded wagons.

Haulage across the years has included EWS and DB Cargo Class 66s while the GBRf Class 60 and Class 66 fleets are regulars on the trains. There have also been short distance movements at Liverpool Docks using GBRf's Class 56 56098 and Class 69s when traversing the docks branch.

These new and exclusive Hornby IIA-D twin packs each feature a pair of uniquely numbered biomass wagons. This pack features 83 70 0668 052-2 and 83 70 0698 003-6. The wagons have turned metal wheels, NEM coupling pockets with small tension locks fitted, optional buffer beam brake pipes and an accurate body profile which includes internal equipment visible through the cutouts in the bodysides.

The new exclusive IIA-Ds are due to be released in Spring 2026 and are available to pre-order now through Key Model World with a £10 non-refundable deposit.
