Haulage of freight by rail predated carrying passengers and Hornby’s growing range of TT:120 scale wooden bodied freight wagons form a critical part of any model railway, large or small. Available to buy now from the Key Model World Shop for £19.99 (RRP £21.49).

While not constructed to a single common design, the 7-plank open wagon was the mainstay of Britain’s freight rolling stock through to the 1950s. Owned independently by businesses and companies, they were renowned for colourful sign-written liveries and could carry everything from packaged goods to bulk minerals.

Hornby’s new TT:120 7-plank open wagon models those with an opening end unloading door, fine moulded underframe detail and several colourful paint schemes. Decorated as No. 5 in the dark red livery of coal merchant George Matthews of Wolverhampton, this eye-catching mineral wagon is not only suitable for the West Midlands, but would be accurate for any region, as such private owner wagons reached across Britain between the 1920s (era 2) and 1940s.

An eye catching and colourful addition to a steam-era model railway, private owner wagons are a key and interesting expansion to the growing range of TT:120 wagons. Ideal for use with Hornby’s era 2 and 3 rolling stock, the interesting liveries and universal appeal of 7-plank mineral wagons suit both the largest and smallest model railway.

Product highlights include:

  • 7-plank open wagon ‘George Matthews’ No. 5
  • NEM standard removable couplings
  • Turned metal wheels
  • High detail moulded underframe
  • Wide appeal and universal operation
