A critical element to any goods train through to the 1970s, brake vans were essential to the safe operation of freight on Britain’s railways. Hornby’s exciting range of new TT:120 scale wagons now includes this essential LNER brake van, available to buy now from the Key Model World Shop for £25.99 (RRP £27.99).

Developed to ensure that loose coupled freight trains could be safely braked and controlled, brake vans were essential to every freight train in the UK until the advent of air braking from the 1960s. Each of the ‘Big Four’ railway companies developed their own types of brake van and they could also be seen operating across all regions of the rail network.

An equally vital new addition to Hornby’s TT:120 freight range, the LNER’s Diagram 0.34 ‘Toad B’ brake van entered service from 1927 and became the railways standard design throughout the 1930s. Decorated in pre-war LNER bauxite with large NE lettering, 140422 is suited to the 1930s and 40s (era 3) and features finely moulded wooden planking, accurate LNER wooden duckets and a detailed underframe.

A truly important addition to a steam-era model railway, suited to use with any region, the Toad B is a good addition alongside 1930s-era rolling stock offered by Hornby in TT:120 scale. Brake vans are critical to any layout, large or small, and this release ideal for use with Hornby’s era 3 rolling stock of any region.

Product highlights include:

  • LNER Dia.034 'Toad B' Brake Van No. 140422 in NE bauxite
  • NEM standard removable couplings
  • Turned metal wheels
  • High detail interior and glazed duckets
  • Vital addition to any steam era model railway
