This Airfix plastic kit models the Supermarine Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1:48 scale and features 188 separate parts as well as decals for two difference schemes.

The Supermarine Spitfire is the most famous of the Second World War fighter aircraft and this kit follows the development of the airframe to the Mk.XIV. This saw the classic fighter gain a Rolls Royce Griffon engine which made it one of the RAF's most capable fighters in the Second World War.

The new engine increased power but also meant that the existing Spitfire airframe would be redesigned at the front and rear as well as gaining a distinctive five blade Rotol propeller. The upgrades made the Griffon engined examples 80mph faster than the Merlin engined machines.

Taking part in air operations in support of and in the months following the D-Day landings, the Mk.XIV was used extensively by the 2nd Tactical Air Force, equipping all 20 of the Spitfire Squadrons that operated from the continent in the months between D-Day and VE-Day.

The Airfix 1:48 scale kit includes decals for the following schemes:

  • A05135 - Supermarine Spitfire MkXIV 1/48 Aircraft flown by Squadron Leader James Bernard Prendergast, No. 414 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, B156 Lunberg, Germany, May/June 1945. (A)
  • A05135 - Supermarine Spitfire MkXIV 1/48 No.II (AC) Squadron, Royal Air Force, Second Tactical Air Force (2TAF), RAF Buckeburg, Germany, 1950.51. (B)

The images show the completed kit, schemes and 3D-renders of the tooling. To complete the kit customers will need a craft knife, cutting mat, sanding boards, tweezers, glue and paint to assemble the model.
