Since the publication of the first three editions of Modern Locomotives Illustrated covering the Class 47s and 57s in 2009 and 2010, a huge amount has happened to these fleets. It is quite surprising that, in late 2019, we still have around 50 Class 47s in service and the entire fleet of Class 57 conversions continues to operate on the main line, although for different businesses.

In this edition we have included a full update on the Class 57 fleet, the 33 examples of the original Class 47 design, totally rebuilt in a joint venture between Porterbrook Leasing and Brush Traction to ‘re-engineer’ original locos with second hand Electro-Motive power units and modernised electrical equipment.
