Designed for the West Coast Mainline, the fifty class 50 locomotives were built by English Electric and introduced from 1967 on the West Coast Mainline. The powerful 100mph Type 4s faced successive redeployments and served both the Western and South Western regions of BR. Carrying many colourful liveries until withdrawal in 1994, the popular class continue to operate in large numbers on heritage and main lines today.
Replicating a standard but highly popular condition for the class 50s, Hornby has modelled 50040 ‘Leviathan’ in the stand-out BR large logo blue, a livery that epitomises the use of the class during the 1980s (eras 7/8) and is the livery remains popular to this day.
Internally the locomotive features a Next18 DCC decoder socket, making it a simple upgrade to digital control with Hornby Triplex Sound Bluetooth decoders or other brands of decoders. Hornby’s TT:120 class 50 is highly detailed with separately fitted parts and etched metal detailing and is the perfect companion to the Mk2 carriages and HSTs currently in development by Hornby.
