D-Day (80th Anniversary)

This year is the 80th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy. D-Day was the world’s biggest ever amphibious landing and involved US, British, Canadian, and Free French troops landing by sea and air.

A massive Allied air armada cleared the way for the invasion on June 6, 1944, and protected the beachhead from Nazi counter attacks.

In D-Day, we profile the invasion force, looking at the troops and commanders who stormed ashore. We will also look at the defenders who were waiting on the beaches in the vain hope of stopping the invasion.

The tanks, ships and aircraft that won D-Day for the allies are examined, as well as those of the German defenders.
