Some dates in the evolution of the British rail system come to mind easily, the Grouping in 1923, Nationalisation in 1948, and the Beeching report of 1963 being of particular importance.

Perhaps few would see the events of the 1990s in that light, possibly because it was a process lasting much of the decade, but the ‘90s arguably saw the greatest change of all in our rail system with privatisation, booming passenger numbers and the arrival of locomotives not built in the UK.
