Sunderland

NOTE: This is a new book edition of Aeroplane Icons: Sunderland.

In the early 1900s, Short Brothers opened its doors as one of the earliest commercial aircraft manufacturers. One of its most iconic aircraft, the Short Sunderland, proved revolutionary in flying boat design and joined the RAF in 1938. Coastal Command operated almost 50 different types of aircraft during World War Two, but only the Sunderland would continually serve on the front line from the first day to the last. This, and the fact that the flying boat remained in RAF service until 1958 (and almost a decade beyond with the RNZAF), is testimony to the aircraft’s forward-thinking design. The Sunderland was by far the best flying boat the RAF had ever received and, sadly, was also the last.

With more than 260 images, this new book edition looks at the design and development of the flying boat, its service in World War Two and the Korean War, and why it continues to hold a special place in the hearts of aviation enthusiasts and all those who experienced serving on one of the RAF’s ‘Queen of Boats’.
