Boeing 727

Two years before the introduction of the Boeing 707 into service in 1958, designers at Boeing began to work on a short-/medium-range and medium capacity airliner for use on US domestic and inter-city routes, with the ability to operate from more remote airports and shorter runways, the final outcome was the Boeing 727. Following its maiden flight in February 1963, the 727-100 entered commercial service with Eastern Air Lines one year later. Boeing went on to build a larger and more capable version of the 727, the 727-200 Advanced, which made its debut with Northeast Airlines in December 1967. In total, 1,261 series -200 aircraft were built.

With more than 180 images, this book describes the history of the Boeing 727 from its evolution, design and development through to its entry into commercial service. In addition to passenger-carrying services, it outlines the type’s use as a ‘Quick Change’ convertible passenger-cargo variant and freighter and explores some of the modifications undertaken to improve fuel efficiency, reduce noise emissions and enhance the performance of the aircraft.
