Class 20s are infrequent visitors to the Settle line, so it was good to see D8096 and D8107 Jocelyn Fielding (20096 and 20107) in 1960s British Railways’ green livery heading south approaching Ribblehead station on Saturday 8 March 2025. Built in 1961 and still operating for Locomotive Services Ltd, they are working the 11.46 Carlisle to Preston section of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society’s ‘Seven Counties Rambler’ railtour, which left Linlithgow at 06.11.

The Settle to Carlisle Railway is a skilfully engineered main line railway, which runs through the rugged and beautiful northern Pennines. Busy with freight and passenger trains in the 1970s, it survived closure proposals in the 1980s.

Today, with its neighbouring railways from Skipton and Settle Junction to Carnforth, and Blackburn to Hellifield, it remains an important part of therail network.

This title tells the story of these railways and their trains through nearly 50 years of change, from the long wagonload freight trains of the 1970s, to diverted express trains of the 1980s, long distance coal trains, and the passenger and freight trains of today.
