The ‘A3’ class 4-6-2s were originally Gresley’s famed ‘A1’ introduced in 1922 but were gradually converted with during the 1930s and 1940s to improve steaming and efficiency. Alongside famed class member Flying Scotsman, the A3s were a staple of the East Coast Mainline into the early 1960s and the new addition for TT:120 scale from Hornby replicates 60084 Trigo in its final British Railways lined green livery with late crests, double chimney, German-style smoke deflectors and streamlined non-corridor tender.
The locomotive is finely detailed, with accurate details for an early BR ‘A3’ and high-quality printed detail, including BR late crest used from 1957. Internally, the model features a Next18 decoder socket in the tender together with a 15mm x 11mm cube speaker making it a simple locomotive to upgrade to digital sound with Hornby Triplex Sound Bluetooth decoders or other brands. Suitable for the late 1950s and early 1960s (era 5), this model of 60084 is an excellent companion to Hornby’s range of BR late crest ‘A3’ and ‘A4’ locomotives and ideal for use with Hornby’s super detailed Pullmans, forthcoming Gresley Teak carriages and ubiquitous BR Mk1 carriages in BR maroon.
