Airbus A400M Atlas

Modern Military Aircraft Series Vol. 15.

The Airbus A400M is a medium-lift turboprop military transport aircraft currently in service with the air forces of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Malaysia, Spain, Luxembourg and Belgium.

It was originally intended to be operational by 2008, but was beset by delays in manufacture and escalating production costs. The first aircraft was received in France in 2013 and has proved to be superior to many other medium aircraft currently operational, including the highly popular tactical transport C-130 Hercules and Super Hercules. Currently, two-thirds of all A400Ms ordered have been delivered, with the remainder scheduled to be complete by 2032.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, European A400Ms have participated in NATO operations to airlift personnel and military cargo, as well as refuel fighter jets on combat air patrols over Europe’s eastern borders. Since 2015, the aircraft has airlifted relief aid during and after humanitarian crises, and implemented medical evacuations from war-affected regions of the world. It was designed to carry large and awkward loads and to take off and land from difficult terrain.

This book discusses the coordinated plan of European nations to work together to design, build and manufacture an aircraft for the future, and provides an in[1]depth review of the operations in which it has played a role for each nation.
