Setting out from their overpopulated homelands to find new places in which to live and farm, Scandinavian farmers, already expert sailors and boatbuilders, crossed the seas to discover new lands in Europe, North America and Russia. As the number of incursions grew, and indigenous people were forced to make way for them, the Vikings developed a treacherous reputation for raiding, warring, plundering, stealing and enslaving.

Their organisation was cohesive and their training rigorous. Their barbarism changed the nature of the organisation of the British people. Having hitherto vied for power among one another, regional rulers consolidated into a nation unified under a single monarch, resolving to work together to defeat their common enemy.

This is the story of the evolution of the Viking peoples, their rise to ultimate power and the influence they wielded for almost 300 years.
