Vietnam -The Long Journey

The Vietnam conflict spanned four decades from the end of French colonialism after World War Two through to the fall of Saigon to communist forces in the spring of 1975.

During the war, American involvement deepened steadily.

While the US government pursued a policy of escalation, public opinion and anti-war activism swelled amid burgeoning casualties and cost.

At length, the American perspective evolved to ‘peace with honour’ and an exit strategy that left many philosophical and practical issues unresolved.

The Vietnam experience shaped the American perspective on global power and influence.

Its impact on society is felt to this day. Armed conflict in southeast Asia further shaped the course of the Cold War and relations with the emerging Third World.
