British Military Biplanes: 1920–40

Following the Great War, the fledgling aircraft industry was silenced as orders from the military disappeared and the potential for innovative designs and cutting-edge development lost impetus.

Aircraft manufacturers diversified to stay in business, but as the politics of the era took on an ominous tone, it became clear that World War Two would be fought in the skies. Following on from British Military Biplanes 1912–19, this volume introduces the next phase of biplane aircraft development in Britain.

Many had origins in aircraft designed for flying clubs, with speed records and racing their main focus. As thoughts returned to war requirements, a new impetus to design and build aircraft for photo reconnaissance, maritime search and rescue, troop transport, fighting and bombing, as well as training and as tugs gathered momentum. Included in this volume are the great designs and innovations of the interwar years. Each major British manufacturer is included.

The aircraft that took on iconic status and can still be seen flying today, albeit in small numbers, are all described. Alongside are experimental and prototype aircraft produced for trials, ultimately unsuccessful, but each adding to the knowledge and experience that propelled the industry forward.
