British Railways Steam 1967: Steam's Swansong

By 1967 British Railways steam was in terminal decline, but still had a reasonable geographic spread on New Year’s Day. However, within 12 months it would only be operating in north-west England, 1967 being notable for the last mile-a-minute timetabled steam operations, the last (unofficial) 100mph+ steam expresses, and the end of pre-Grouping steam, as well as the elimination of all Scottish, North Eastern and Southern steam.

British Railways Steam 1968: End of an Era

This programme is a tribute to the last eight months of British Railways main line steam, the ever increasing numbers of available diesels leading to less and less work for BR’s run-down fleet of steam locomotives, by now all operating from London Midland Region sheds in north-west England, while electrics were in charge on the southern reaches of the West Coast main line. The story begins on New Year’s Day 1968 with a motive power survey and steam depot directory.
