 | Superfighters - SOLD OUT Super Fighters - the Jet Age
Ever since man first used the aircraft in a military combat role it has been the fighter that has caught the imagination of the public and of course the pilot. From World War One to the present day there have been literally dozens of classic fighters that have fought many a battle around the world - Spitfire, Mustang, Hunter, Phantom, Eagle and Mirage to name but a few.
The arrival of the jet fighter towards the end of World War Two brought in a whole new dimension to aerial combat - high speed. Progressively the past 50 or so years have witnessed enormous strides in technology and capabilities as the jet fighter has matured.
Jet fighters introduced the swept wing, variable geometry air intakes, extreme agility and super cruise to the world of air combat as manufacturers sought to give pilots a tactical edge. The latest examples, such as the Lockheed Martin F/A-22 Raptor and the Eurofighter Typhoon, are true air dominance fighters that have abilities the F-86 Sabre pilot of the 1950s could only dream about.
This magazine examines some of the classic jet fighters of the past 50 years, including the English Electric Lightning, McDonnell Douglas Phantom, North American Super Sabre, Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker, Hawker Hunter and Eurofighter Typhoon and rates the performance of these weapons of war. Comparisons are made to show the pace of development that the jet fighter has been through since the first Messerschmitt Me 262s took to the skies in 1944.
